We are seeing a transformation that is moving away from fossil fuel projects to renewable energy projects.

In the United States with Federal grant funded programs many schools and municipal properties are installing solar panels on building rooftops. This transformation is starting to take full flight even on our corporate campuses. The aerial view of our topography shows an ever expanding number of parking lots and building rooftops mounted with solar panels giving testimony to this new renewable energy boom. This transformation has become a global project of priority for many nations. The Federal Government of Germany has set a target of renewable energies of 60 percent of gross final energy consumption by 2050. It is forecasted that renewable energy sources in Electricity generation will increase to 80 per cent by 2050.

However, the long term viability of these renewable energy projects depends on critical resources and material flows for this transformation. Germany’s energy turnaround shoulders a pioneering role in the international arena that must rely on their own new studies to advise whether and how the transformation of the energy supply system can be shaped with the objective of more resourceefficiently along with a high degree of expansion of renewable energies. Their studies needed to include investigating which “critical” minerals relevant in Germany for the production of technologies that generate electricity, heat and fuels from renewable energies in a time standpoint up to 2050.

The success of pioneering projects like this national undertaking recognizes the components identified as “critical” assessment items. The scope of these projects include long-term availability of identified raw materials, the supply situation, recyclability and the environmental conditions prevailing the extraction of these raw materials before construction begins.
